Is Your Pet Itching for Relief?

Let’s Talk About Itchy Pet Awareness Month

August is all about comfort and we’re here to help your pet find it.

Does your dog seem to be in a nonstop scratching cycle? Or is your cat constantly licking one spot like it’s their full-time job? If so, you're not alone. August is Itchy Pet Awareness Month, and it’s a great time to take a closer look at what might be causing all that itch—and how to help your pet feel better.

What’s Causing Your Pet’s Itch?

An occasional scratch is no big deal. But if your pet is itching constantly, it could be a sign of something more serious happening beneath the surface. Common culprits include:

  • Allergies (to food, fleas, pollen, or dust)
  • Parasites like fleas and mites
  • Skin infections caused by bacteria or yeast
  • Environmental triggers (grass, mold, cleaning sprays—even your laundry detergent!)
  • Chronic skin conditions like atopic dermatitis

Scratching and licking can lead to raw skin, infections, hair loss, and major discomfort—so don’t ignore the signs.

Signs Your Pet’s Itch Needs Attention

Here are a few red flags to watch for:

  • Nonstop scratching or licking
  • Red, irritated skin or rashes
  • Hair loss or thinning fur
  • Scabs, sores, or hot spots
  • Smelly ears or frequent ear infections
  • Shaking their head or chewing paws

Relief Starts With the Right Treatment

The good news? Relief is possible. Once we get to the root cause, there are lots of treatment options that can bring your pet comfort, including:

  • Allergy medications
  • Medicated shampoos and sprays
  • Prescription diets or food eliminations
  • Flea and parasite control
  • Allergy testing and immunotherapy based on the results
